A Gorgeous Day

I want to tell you about I wonderful afternoon I had recently. This past Sunday, after church and then lunch at our host’s home, someone suggested we go out to play some soccer. We got everyone together and went to our host’s uncle’s house. He lives at what appeared to be a disused shop yard with a couple of large warehouse type buildings, but there was a grassy yard in the back with some goals set up. A few more cousins and friends were planning on joining us, but they were going to be about an hour later than us, so we had some time to just sit and hang out. Initially,...

I Wasn’t Prepared For This

We joke that those words are our team motto: “I wasn’t prepared for this”. We speak those words when we prepare to teach a three hour class to English majors, and then show up at the university and have to throw out our plans and wing a 3 hour class about sports to Physical Education majors. “I wasn’t prepared for this”. Those are the words that are spoken through nervous laughs when we are randomly called on to share a testimony at church or bible study. “I wasn’t prepared for this”! We laugh and shiver as most of our team continues to...

In The Midst of Celebration

So this weekend was full of celebrations! Yet in the midst of it all my perspective changed. And because of that, I’m still celebrating. Let me explain further.  So it’s quite evident that I can’t speak spanish. I obviously get by with hand gestures and a smile.. yet it can be so frustrating when all I really want to do is reach out and thoroughly get to know some one here. This past weekend we left Ometepe Island to work with another ministry. It’s made up of people that have poured their hearts out into ministry, a building that supports them, children in...

Prayer Walking in L.A.

But really, I went to L.A. The town where CICRIN is located is called Los Angeles and, funnily enough, down the road is Sacramento. My Tuesday morning assignment was prayer walking with four of my team through Los Angeles. Before we left, we stood together and I prayed for God to guide our steps, thoughts, and words. After, we walked out onto the main road past houses, people riding bikes, bus stops, and convenience stores. About ten twenty minutes in, one of teammates suggested we turn down a down a small dirt road (not that uncommon, most of the roads are dirt). It was beautiful and...

But He Said Hermoso

Hermoso.  It is one of the few Spanish words that I will never forget.  Hermoso is used to describe something that is beautiful and lovely.  Hermoso is not something that I would use to describe my heart.  But for a reason that I still do not fully understand, the Lord did.  When you are living life on the field, it becomes incredibly easy to become complacent.  It is easy to justify only giving half of your heart to the work you are doing, or to only do it half as well as you could have.  After all, you need to pace yourself.  You need to take things...

Life Update

I can hardly believe that I have been living in Oceanview, Capetown for a month now. It’s crazy how fast time is flying by and how I will be home before I even realize it. The ministry that we do here is never really the same day to day so I’m getting to do a variety of things. Because of this I’m learning how to be more flexible and how to just go with whatever is asked of me. Before I came on this trip I thought of myself as a very flexible person, but I’m realizing that I’m not as good at that as I thought. I’m learning that it’s hard to not know...
