Different, Not Defeated

Sitting here writing this blog on the side of the road, under a tree in a plastic chair… I think that’s all I need to say. Comfort has been a word stripped from my vocabulary these past two weeks. First traveling for 4 days straight, I mastered the ability to sleep upright or on the airport floor, also how to ration my snacks instead of inhaling them as I used to do. Then finally arriving to our final destination in Cambodia I was ready to regain some comfort of a routine but that’s not really how it went either. The first week here has been a lot about finding happiness...

It comes down to a choice

The transition into living life at an orphanage in the developing world of Cambodia has been quite the brutal awakening. But a really needed brutal awakening for me. Life in Banteay Meanchey includes living in constant heat and humidity with some crazy rainstorms now and again, waking up every morning at four am to Buddhist monks chanting because September just happens to be Holy month here in Cambodia, and the adjustment to having a lot of new roommates- rats, spiders, ants, mosquitos, lizards, lice ect (praise the Lord for mosquito nets and tea tree oil). Stillness

I’m starting to understand what it means to be still, I’m not talking about no body movements type of still. Something far more meaningful is what I am leaning towards. Since training camp the good Lord has been teaching me a lot about myself. That is, He has pointed out to me that I’m a terrible listener and that I have a very busy mind along with being a busy body (thanks mom). I appreciate my time reading and journaling alone, since these last couple of weeks I don’t receive much of that so I’m defiantly learning how to pick and choose my times of...

Warm Welcome via Tarantula

If only I had enough words to encompass how much I already loved this place. Kampong Cham is such a wonderful place, but the people that make up Kampong Cham are even more wonderful. Our host, Vandy, operates an orphanage for 43 children. The orphanage is located in a village in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. My team arrived here a little over a week ago and the vast amount of experiences I’ve already gained is incredible.Once we touched down on the runway in Phnom Penh, I became overwhelmed with adoration for this foreign land. Little did I know that my adoration was going to grow...

The Gap Year

Hey all! As many of you know, I will be spending most of September 2017-April 2018 doing a Gap Year. I have had so many people ask me “What in the world is a Gap Year?” Many people think that I am just sitting out of college my first year. That is not true…well, not completely true. I am not going to college this year, and I am, by far, not just sitting around! A Gap Year is the year between high school and college, or the year right after you graduate college, when you take that time to travel and give back to the world around you. There are many programs available. Some...
