this is living

two nights ago, i was dancing to hillsong young and free in spanish with some of my new best friends after a church service. we were having the best time, jumping around, laughing, and worshipping a little undignified. i remember looking around and feeling God saying, “this is living. this is freedom. this is joy.”   that time i spent dancing with my sisters meant so much to me- even though to others (and maybe even my other teammates) it might have just been a silly moment that they won’t think twice about. i have struggled for years with insecurities, depression,...

Expecting the Unexpected

So, if you are reading this, I’m alive and thriving just to let you know. As of yesterday, I have been in Costa Rica for two week. Crazy, I know. I survived the mountains, I have survived the jungle, and now I am residing in the city. But let me tell you none of this is what I expected. God has once again taken everything that I thought Costa Rica was going to be and fully blown my mind. While I had gone into the trip thinking that I would spend all my time in the city doing kids ministry, that is not what I was really here to do. Talamanca

Talamanca, you were a place where I was full of love and life. I did not know I needed you but I did. Talamanca, you were a place where your people and I were much alike. You were a place where God was moving.  Talamanca, you were a place where I was challenged. When we worked a day as if local farmers do. Carrying racks of bananas down mountainsides and being knee deep in mud. That was probably...

Buried with Him in Baptism

I was baptized for the first time at the age of seven… I remember being dunked in the “big hot bath tub” at church, my family being at church to witness it, getting a necklace in the shape of a cross, and eating cake to celebrate. I learned about what baptism meant… I heard the words “buried with him in baptism, and raised to walk in newness of life…” but at the age of seven, I didn’t know what trials, temptations, pain, and hurt would look like. I knew nothing of pain… I was very blessed and never had to worry about anything,...

Smiling wide

You really don’t know the difference in cultures until you enter a new one. Textbooks and the internet tell us what it’s like to live somewhere far from home, but you really have to enter a new culture in order to understand it. When we came to Thailand we learned about the people’s natural tendencies during a ‘cultural orientation’. Even when I learned about Thailand in Thailand by Thai people, I still failed to fully grasp the type of people I was about to be surrounded by. We learned during this orientation that Thai people are innately kind and loving. I...
