Speak, Lord, Your Servant is Listening

Can You Hear the Holy Spirit? Often when we pray, it’s a one way conversation but this morning we invited the Holy Spirit to dialogue with us. 5 of us got together, we wrote our names down and passed them out but did not look to see whose name we had. We then spent time praying for the person we had and asking the Holy Spirit to give us a picture, word, Bible verse, song, vision, etc for that person.  There can be fear of failing, a performance mentality that can sometimes get in the way when you do a listening prayer activity. Doubt can be a thief: “the Lord doesn’t...

A letter to the NHO orphans

Sweet sweet New Hope kiddos, Wow! These 3 weeks in Preah Vihear have flown by. It feels like just yesterday we were pulling up in the van to your little orphanage. We arrived tired, hungry, stinky, and eager to serve and show you God’s love and now looking back I realize that I slept, ate, showered, and served but you showed me God’s love. I was overcome with emotion the first time I worshipped with you as you all squeezed your eyes shut, raised your little hands to the heavens, and proclaimed His name. Your servants hearts are so evident. Thank you for organizing my shoes,...

a time for everything

The past year of my life has been nothing short of wild. I went to India and Mongolia, I’m currently in Cambodia, and soon I’ll be in Thailand. I have met hundreds of people, prayed for most of them, learned “hello” and “Jesus loves you” in 3 different (soon to be 4) languages. I graduated with my masters degree, got my first “job”, quit my first job, drove across the country with my best friend. Laid on the beach in the same week I climbed a mountain. I lived in a city with public transportation for the first time. I rode camels, ate...

On Fat Cakes and Long Walks

Abba might be one of my favorite words in the entire world. It connotes so much more than what Father, or Lord, could ever mean. Abba is Daddy, a tender, loving word intended to invoke feelings of deep appreciation, respect, and admiration. I think the fact that we get to call the King of the universe Abba is pretty special. To me, this is an invitation to open our eyes and see the multitude of ways our Abba delights in us. Because Abba carries such a significant meaning by way of a deep, personal, attachment, it means we can expect our Father to treat us this way. Translated to...

What’s an apple mean you?

The first night in Africa I woke up to someone trying to break into our house and our security guard Cartwright chasing them away. Cartwright has been a pleasure to have around our compound. Every time we walk past him, he greets us with a big smile. The one thing that caught me off guard was one night when I asked him if he wanted an apple. His jaw slightly dropped and he responded with, “I haven’t had an apple in over three years”. This made me realize how little I understand what poverty looks like. A lot of times we get mad when our server takes too long with our meal...
