A Servant’s Heart

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28

Here’s the honest truth: I am one week into this mission trip and haven’t talked about Jesus to anyone who didn’t already know about Him. In fact, I haven’t shared the Gospel with anyone in Costa Rica. Even so, I am confident I have furthered the Kingdom of God. Let me tell you how.

I have been a servant.

The King of all Kings came to Earth to be a servant, so I will too. I have chiseled a gutter, replaced rotted fence posts, built a driveway, brushed down spider webs, raked a lawn, cleaned windows, and more. I have said yes to whatever our host asks of us because that’s what Jesus would do. I had the realization that anything I do to serve others for nothing in return is something I can do to build His kingdom.

Kingdom work doesn’t always look or feel like kingdom work. It might look like deep cleaning a building of prayer in preparation for future groups to come and worship. It might look like helping around the property where a man and his wife grow food to give to widows, prostitutes, and single mothers. It might look like chiseling through cement for hours to build a gutter to prevent flooding. It might look like an uncomfortable task that you don’t want to do. My challenge to you? Do it anyway, and do it with a joyful heart.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4
